Treating yourself to a laser peel is a great way to reset and revive your skin in-between seasons. Unlike chemical peels that rely on harsh acids and other chemicals, laser peels utilize light technology to improve the skin. Still, like any peel, the necessary downtime following the procedure can feel lengthy, but the results are so worth it.
That’s why the perfect time to indulge is now. With quarantine restrictions still in place and the upcoming holiday season, a laser peel strikes a perfect balance: plenty of time to allow your face to heal in the confines of your own home with results that will peak just in time for Mom’s pecan pie.
Here’s what you need to know about laser peels:
While laser resurfacing isn’t a miracle cure, it is a great place to start. With the ability to treat a wide variety of skin problems with great success, the popularity of laser peels isn’t surprising. Laser resurfacing peels have the ability to reduce wrinkles, age spots, acne scars, and other blemishes with the added bonus of tightening skin and balancing tone.
During your laser resurfacing peel, an intense beam of energy will be applied to your skin, removing skin layer by layer in a precise manner. This meticulous method destroys the dead and rough skin on the top layers of the skin known as the epidermis. While this alone works to treat a wide array of skin conditions, the destruction of the skin triggers a healing response in the underlying skin (the dermis).
The healing response triggers collagen growth and production, which means smoother skin tone and texture. However, it’s important to remember that this transformation doesn’t happen overnight. It can take up to six weeks to see your final results.
Think of the laser peel as a two-for-one: You go in to treat age spots for example, and leave without the age spots and with smoother skin, knowing that your body is creating fresh collagen to help you look younger and feel confident.
Although this may sound great, don’t forget the caveat: downtime. Following your laser peel, your skin will be sensitive to sunlight for a period after the procedure so we advise avoiding direct sunlight as much as possible, while also wearing an SPF of at least 30.
Please note downtime will vary, depending on how aggressively you are treated. This is one of the important things that will be discussed at your consultation. For most of our patients, we recommend a conservative approach that usually requires 3 to 5 days of downtime.
Lastly, although it’s usually enough to treat your skin with one procedure, sometimes it takes a second laser treatment to achieve the aesthetic you want. Since there is no one size fits all for skincare, when you come in for a consultation Dr. Lappert will discuss a realistic treatment plan tailored to your needs and wants.
