What are age spots?
Age spots (liver spots, sun spots) are the tan to brown freckle-like marks caused by excessive sun exposure. They commonly appear on the face, chest, shoulders, and arms where the body gets the most sun. Ultraviolet (UV rays) accelerate the production of melanin, which gives skin its brown pigmentation. Age spots form when overactive pigment cells and melanin group in higher concentrations.
What causes age spots?
When we expose our skin to ultraviolet (UV) light, the production of melanin is accelerated. Melanin is the pigment in our skin that produces a darker color. When you lie out in the sun or go to a tanning bed, your skin becomes more tan thanks to melanin. When exposed to frequent UV rays over a long period of time, higher concentrations of melanin will group, and age spots will start to pop up. Wearing sunscreen can help to limit these spots, but it cannot prevent them from developing.
Why do freckles form?
Like age spots, freckles also appear on the skin as a result of sun exposure. They may vary in color but are primarily darker than the surrounding skin and are uniform in color. Freckles are also a genetic trait, meaning you likely inherited them from your parents.
Freckles tend to appear on the face, but can also occur in places that receive a lot of direct sunlight, like the shoulders and arms. They are produced or may become more pronounced when UV rays trigger the body to create more melanin to protect the skin. If you are unhappy with the freckles on your face or body, the providers at Lappert Plastic Surgery can help.
